Double dose
Sat 7th Jun 2008 by Ben Palmer.Yesterday's extract of Friday's Child in the Daily Mail caused a huge response, which still stuns me this morning.
To everyone who has contacted me: Thank you. I am replying as fast as I can!
The extract was from my book Friday's Child which is the story of what happened back then. Today the Guardian has printed an interview, After Jessica, that is as much about now and what my hopes are.
I'm flattered that the article has been put on the front of the Family supplement.

Hi Ben,
I read the extract in the paper and your emotions came across so strongly I ended up crying. Later my mum started telling me about childbed fever and I realised she had read your story too. She had also cried. That's just two of us... there are so many families out there who are now aware of your story and very much aware of childbed fever, thanks to you.
I've told your story to my two sisters who are nurses and I know they'll pass it on too. I've also mentioned it to the Head Midwife at my own local hospital.
By the way, I'll do a blog post about the book just as soon as I get a chance
Ben, i just read your interview in the guardian and i am still in tears. i had my second daughter 3 weeks ago and on coming home i developed some strange pains- luckily i am absolutely fine but the community mw and gp were completely incompetent about it, on reading the horror that Jessica and you went through i was left shivering in fear of what could have been.
i am angry and shocked and furious and deeply sad about what happened to your wonderful wife- am thinking of you and your children, i wish you strength and courage.
Hi Ben.
i just wanted to say how awfully sorry i am to hear about what happened to Jessica. I came across your site whilst searching the net for info on uterine infections. I had my baby girl 12 weeks ago by c-section. i was awfully ill & was told 'it was normal' i was discharged from hospital after 48 hrs & the pain, high temperature etc continued to worsen. my midwifes just kept telling me it was my milk coming in, it got to the stage where walking caused me to scream out in pain.. eventually i called my own g.p & he visited me at home, examined me & a uterine infection was diagnosed, he was discusted that the nurses & midwives hadnt listened to my symptoms & took me seriously, i have just finished my 4th course of antibiotics as the symptoms keep coming back,& am awaiting the results of an ultrasound, i didnt realise how serious this illness could be, if it wasnt for me having such a considerate doctor i dread to think how ill i would have become.
my heart goes out to you & your family, you are a wonderful man & thank you so much for all you are doing to raise awareness.
xx
I am finishing Ben's book and it's been an emotional journey. I would like to help and raise awareness. I am already a Trustee of Well Being of Women, the leading UK Charity for Women's Health issues and I could help support your campaign. I live in Putney, have 2 young kids and would be happy to meet with Ben whenever convenient. Keep the pressure Ben. Warmest regards,
Frederic Michel
Sinead, thank you and I'm sorry for making you both cry. I now realise how many people have been in tears, and I am genuinely sorry to be the cause, but also am so relieved that people are that moved; I don't want Jessica's story to be easily forgotten. I want childbed fever deaths to stop. Thank you for your good work in spreading the message.
MG, thank you for your support, again my apologies for your tears.
Leigh, I read your story with horror. Normal? No no NO, how can they say that? I am so glad someone was there to catch you and have my fingers crossed for a full and speedy recovery.
Frederic, thank you and I'm grateful - I will email you directly.
Ben - am just about to go out and buy your book. Sorry I haven't been in touch, I wonder if you'll be free for some lunch soon. Sarah Keegan x x x x x
Ben,
I finished reading Friday's Child yesterday. What an amazing book. It is tremendously well written, and the sense of shock and loss is in every word. I really hope that you get the message across to as many pregnant mums or pregnant mums to be, as possible. The thought that I had was about whether posters or flyers could be sent to maternity clinics, surgeries etc. I don't know if this would be financially possible or not.
The best of wishes to you, Harry & Emily.
Annie,
I'm very flattered and grateful kind for your words of support.
I'm really keen to get information leaflets and posters out as widely as possible, but yes; it's a big project!
Best wishes to you, Ben
Dear ben, how my heart fills of sadness for you at the loss of your beautiful wife and the mother of your children. Yet the happiness that your book portrays of the life you both had before the tradegy. This is the first I have heard this childbed illness and I thank you for bringing us all the awareness. I have a few friends who are pregnant and will be spreading the word. I have signed the petition but please ask you email with anything else you think we can do to bring awareness to this x god bless you and your babies xx
