State of play

Mon 13th Oct 2008 by Ben Palmer.

It's been a long road - starting Jessica's Trust. For a long time it was just me and a website, then in January this year I was joined, mainly via telephone and email, by a very experienced, organised and efficient Gill Kirk.

In late spring we gained the expert help of a microbiologist and a gynaecologist, as medical advisors.

Four of Jessica's ante-natal group friends then joined me as trustees of the formal Trust, and last month we were granted charitable status.

So much has been done, but there is so far to go.

There are many more people to contact, much help and advice to be sought, and so many people to spread the message to. We've got our poster and leaflet (available for download) which I'd really like to be able to get properly printed and sent out all over the place, e.g. in surgeries and clinics.

There are other documents that could usefully be created as well, and many other methods of raising awareness to explore.

We're busy on Facebook too, with our group, cause and fan page.

So much of this is easy to achieve, at little or no cost, but as we broaden our horizons, it inevitably costs more.

You know what's coming, don't you?

If you would like to make a donation to help us in our work, we would be extremely grateful. At the moment we can only take cheques and postal orders, but we hope to have an online card service up and running soon.

For details, please see www.jessicastrust.org.uk/donate/ and please, if you are a UK taxpayer, fill out the Gift Aid declaration and enable us to claim back an extra 28p for every £1 that you can spare - at no cost to you.

Facebook

Tue 15th Jan 2008 by Ben Palmer.

This evening I created a new Facebook group, also called Jessica's trust.

For those of you who use Facebook, you may like to join the group, and help spread the word about our campaign to raise awareness of childbed fever by inviting your online friends to join as well.

Thank you all for your recent messages of encouragement, and thank you for your support.

Like a Diamond

Sat 28th Jul 2007 by Ben Palmer.

twinkletwinkle.jpgWhen I stand out in our garden, like just a moment ago, and I can hear Emily sitting in the bathroom, gently singing a word - and almost tune - perfect rendition of 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star' my heart bleeds for her, and for Harry.

I ask myself, 'What can I do to make their lives better?' I know where my weaknesses as a parent are, and I know where my strengths are. I need to work on some things, but I think I'm doing an OK job, and they are, essentially, happy.

I can't, though, fix what is really broken, but I can try and stop the same breaking for other children, and I'm always trying to think of new ways of achieving it. However, I can't do it alone. I need help, so please; pass on an email to all your family and friends about my website and ask them to spare a minute to sign the petition, because the more people that know, the less likely a repeat of Jessica's death is, and because the more people who sign, the more likely that the government and the NHS will take notice of our need for our mothers.

If you're on Facebook, you can help spread the message by joining the group, Petition to end Childbed Fever. Then, please, invite all your friends to join and encourage them to sign the petition too. It'll only take a second, but it could delay one other Diamond in the Sky.
